Maltby’s specializes in the repair of all books, whether a rare volume owned by one of the nation’s top museums, a family Bible, School Prize book or the research papers of a commercial company. Depending on the condition of the book, Maltby’s management staff can advise on the appropriate method of treatment. Some bindings require complete restoration, while others need less attention. With re-backing the original spine is retained wherever possible, but if it cannot be preserved, as is sometimes the case with “tight backs”, the new spine can be lettered and tooled to match the original.
Over the years Maltby’s has built up a large quantity of materials for repair work; leathers, cloths, linens, hand-made marbled and plain papers. We also hold an extensive range of hand tools and type for matching purposes.
Rebinds
Complete sets of books can be re-bound in the original style. However when the value of the books does not warrant the cost of, say, a rebind in leather, cloth bindings can be produced which will adequately preserve the volumes.
